Growing Significance of HSS Drill Bits

Author: ANA

The High Speed Steel or the HSS drill bits are used for a variety of industrial applications. Compared to the ordinary high carbon steel bits, these steel tools are ingrained with a number of advanced properties. The High Speed Steel bits are resistant to scratches and tensile compared to the other bits. These bits are durable and used mainly for large scale production drilling.

HSS Drill Bits Important Features

The High Speed Steel bits include a number of advanced features and therefore it is used for a wide variety of purposes.

Tensile: The HSS bits are known to be the toughest bit that can be used to pierce different types of materials. It can be used efficiently on plastic, metal and wood. As it is made of chromium and carbon, it is known to be one of the toughest steel bits.

Heat resistant: It is also known to be heat resistant. The steel bits can be used to pierce holes in stainless steel quite easily. As it is resistive to heat, it can withstand the high temperatures infused during the process.

High speed: The HSS bits can be used effectively for high speed drilling processes. Compared to the carbon bits, these tools can perform efficiently as it is tensile and durable.

Iron content: The High Speed Steel bits contain iron as its base metal. It also contains percentages of tungsten, chromium, carbon, cobalt and other elements. Chromium and carbon is mainly added to induce strength and robustness to the metal. Tungsten is also added to the drill bits to increase the hardness and the heat resistant capacity of the metal. In addition to tungsten, cobalt is also added to the metal bit to increase its heat resistance.

The High Speed Steel bits are available in different grades which include M1, M2 and M50. Among these varieties, the M1 HSS bit is the most expensive type of steel bit. Even though it is known to be the most expensive type of steel bit, it is quite fragile and is susceptible to breakage if used improperly. The M2 HSS bit is more flexible than the M1 steel bit as it contains molybdenum. The M50 bits are less expensive compared to the M1 steel bits. These steel bits are strong but soft compared to the M1 steel bits.

The High Speed Steel bits can be sharpened many times, compared to the other types of drill bits, before it is replaced.

Popular Use of HSS bits

The HSS bits are popularly used for various purposes. It is used in a number of tools and machineries. Compared to the ordinary carbon bits, these tools can withstand high temperature. It is considered to be more efficient than the ordinary bits.

Different types of HSS bits are available in many of the online stores these days at affordable price rates. In comparison to the cobalt bits, the HSS bits are available at reasonable price rates. It is important to choose the right type of drill bit before piercing materials as different types of materials require different types of tools and bits.

Concrete Cutting

Author: Daniel

Concrete can be an obstacle in home improvement procedures. Some times concrete needs to be removed and this is where concrete cutting methods come in. A little knowledge would help the homeowner in deciding which services he requires for home improvement. The Concrete cutting is known as a procedure applied for concrete structures. It involves sawing, removal and drilling of concrete. It is performed by operators with the help of special saws. These saws have blades that have diamond embedded in it. This is a skilled job. The new improved concrete cutting method uses water so that not much dust is released and it leaves a better finish. The most common types of concrete cutting seen are core drilling, slab or flat swing and also a wall sawing.

Core Drilling
This is a procedure of drilling holes through concrete floors and walls. The trick is to get a perfectly round hole. The size of the hole for household applications usually ranges from 1 to 12 inches and in contrast to this the commercial applications may need holes from 60 inches and upwards. These commercial application holes are mostly for utility requirements. These may be for plumbing, clothes dryer, venting furnaces, electrical and heating purposes. Core drilling can be done by amateurs where they can rent out the machine at tool rental stores but these are easily and preferably handled by professionals for a charge.

This technique is known to be used to cut horizontal flat concrete surfaces like pavement, floors etc. The procedure requires the use of saws which have diamond blade mounted on it. A depth of thirty three inches can be cut with these but home improvement procedures do not require a depth of more than six inches. This procedure is useful for the making openings in the concrete floor. These openings may be required to repair damaged water pipes or broken sewer lines. The demolition of driveway, walkway or the removal of unwanted construction needs slab sawing. It is required for landscaping where a portion of a concrete structure needs demolition or alteration. If the basement requires an additional bathroom slab sawing may be needed to remove the concrete and add new plumbing lines. This procedure is quite dangerous and time consuming for an inexperienced hand.

Wall Sawing
As the name suggests it is known as the process of cutting openings in concrete walls as thick as twelve or twenty four inches. These openings may be for doors or windows. This requires saw that attaches to the track on the wall for be cut. The diamond blade required in this case may have a diameter of thirty inches or more. The cutting may be for removing concrete foundations, lowering the elevation of concrete foundation etc. The home owners may need to add connecting doors between basement rooms which might need the removal of concrete structure and this is where wall sawing is required. The procedure requires skilled persons as the work should have a neat finish and without creating much dust and mess.

Everything said and done all these procedures require skilled work and are best left to professionals as these are time consuming and may eventually need the help of a professional to give it the desired look.

MIG Welding – An Explanation

Author: Jarrad Mordue

Metal inert gas welding or MIG welding is a more common reference for gas metal arc welding. MIG welding is a semi/fully automated arc welding process that uses an arc of electricity to create a short circuit between a consumable continuous wire electrode the anode and a cathode which is the metal being welded.

Equipment

MIG welding equipment includes; a welding gun that has a wire feed system, the wire electrode, shielding gas and a power supply.

Power supply

MIG welding uses mostly direct current; this is due to the fact that when the anode is positively charged it provides higher heat concentration thus making it more suitable for melting the wire electrode.

Shielding gas

It provides protection for the welding area from atmospheric gases which could lead to various defects such as porosity or fusion defects. There are some factors considered when choosing a shielding gas this includes, type of material to be weld. Pure inert gases used are helium and argon, carbon dioxide is mixed with argon in varying ratios this combination enhances the weld quality and minimizes mechanical property variations.

Metal transfer mode

The shielding gas forms the arc plasma, shields the molten weld pool and the arc, stabilize the arc on the metal being welded and it allows for a smooth transfer of the weld wire to the molten pool. The common methods of transfer are, short circuit transfer, globular transfer, and spray transfer. They vary on different levels; globular metal transfer produces a lot of heat and has a tendency of producing poor weld surfaces and spatter. It has a higher deposition rate and uses larger electrode wires but it is considered an economical method. In spray transfer the welding electrode metal passes through work piece and thus eliminating any spatter, this in turn gives a high quality weld. It is usually reserved for thick work pieces as it requires a large weld pool, being used on horizontal and flat welding surfaces. Short circuiting transfer, it requires lower current as compared to globular and thus the feed rate of the wire is lower this leads to a short circuit and its quick reversal at a rate of hundred times a second the result is a better weld and less spatter. It allows welding in almost any positions.

Welding operation

The operator guides the welding gun on the weld surface this should be at the recommended orientation and position, maintaining a consistent distance from the electrode tip to the work piece. The lead angle is usually dependant on the specifics of the weld but in most cases remains almost vertical to the surface.

Advantages of MIG welding

It has the ability to join a wide range of metals, due to its ability to vary some of its basics such as the metal transfer method different metals can be worked on and also with varying thickness.

Different welding positions, this enables you weld on any surface vertical, horizontal or inclined.

A good weld quality as one can reduce spatter, this results to smoother finishes which are especially critical for a finishing welds.

It is an easy process to learn as it is an automated process.

Disadvantages

It could prove to be difficult starting an arc especially for a beginner.

The use of inert gas makes this type of welding less portable as compared to arc welding process that do not require an external shielding gas.

NIR and FIR: A Tale of Two Invisible Infrared Energies

Author: Maria Wegner

An electromagnetic wave behaves in various ways, from playing music in your radio to the generating stuff the universe dishes out on a daily basis. The intensity and visibility of these waves are due to the different lengths of the waves. It means the human eye can “see” some waves such as a rainbow; but it cannot see the ones that make people’s lives easier.

One invisible spectrum is infrared energy, which has a longer wavelength than a rainbow’s. Infrared energy is divided between far infrared and near infrared, where the gap in their lengths is apparent. Far infrared is the “more” invisible infrared energy that is hot, an example being the fire in your grill. Near infrared, on the other hand, is the “less” invisible infrared energy that is not hot, an example being the TV remote.

Think of far infrared as the darker red and near infrared as the lighter one. The eyes can only see short wavelengths; yet, even near infrared does not come close to visibility. Perhaps, it does not need to be seen by human eyes to be useful in daily life.

Both types of infrared energy can be found in gadgets people take for granted and other things they rarely find in their homes. Aside from fire, night vision gear and thermal cameras use far infrared energy to detect hot spots. Aside from TV remotes, near infrared energy is used like a highly accurate gauge, making spot-on measurements for industries.

No wonder scientists call it infrared energy: the suffix “infra” is Latin for “below,” as in below red. At lengths of a micrometer to a millimeter, anything below the color red cannot be seen by the naked eye. The rainbow may end up with the usual seven colors, from blue to red; but infrared energy is proof that colors beyond the rainbow exist. You cannot see them per se, but you can see the results they make in a Foss XDS machine.

Infrared energy is one of a few “unsung heroes” that make many things possible. With the use of dispersive NIR and other near infrared machines, they easily identify how much of what stuff is in the cigar you are smoking. It does not matter whether or not you can see infrared energy; you simply know it is there.

For more information on how infrared energy works, visit NASA’s science resource website at NASAScience.nasa.gov. For a more detailed description on how a Foss NIR machine works, ask your trusted dealer.

Industrial Coatings and Safety

Author: Allen Cole

Industrial coatings and safety are a vital component in most industrial processes. Industrial coating is a certain paint application on steel and other concrete derivatives for protection purposes against cases of corrosion. This is required in every industrial process to avoid accumulated rust on the metal surfaces of the machines used in the processes.

The aesthetic and protective properties present in industrial coatings made them highly resistant to corrosion. The coating itself is a vigorously-made amalgamation of various chemical substances that include reinforcing thermoset polyimide, xylan-dry film lubricants, xylene, ethyl acetate, polyimide binder resins, and many more. Though industrial coatings are used mainly to fight off corrosion, there are also other important uses as well. This includes Intumescent coating used for purposes of resisting fire. Coatings can also come from various polymer materials (polyurethane, epoxy, moisture cure urethane, etc).

Both concrete and steel materials used in industrial facilities are protected with such coatings. Manufacturing plants, units, warehouses, welding and construction sites, including various storage facility types cannot be fully functional without the coatings as these also represent safety features within the production.
Workers can have a peace of mind knowing they are safe from debris and rust accumulation that can be dangerous to their health. The protective layer offered by industrial coatings is their main defense against all forms of dangerous dust and debris. Safety from such materials remains a priority. Coatings can last in the long run before surface materials needed new application.

If you own a manufacturing unit, you are already aware how industrial coatings cut down the risks of surface damage that will lead to safety concerns of course. With it, you can be sure that your machinery and other systems are working in perfect conditions and totally safe from the corrosive effects of water, air, and other substances that comes into contact with the surfaces. You need this to avoid machine breakdowns and other damages that will affect production and output.
Larger machinery pieces are normally vulnerable to damage, especially if they must be moved around. You can lengthen the shelf life of your expensive machinery pieces with anti-corrosion industrial coatings and make sure they are working in good order to promote both efficiency and safety.

As mentioned above, the coating is among your best protection against corrosion and cases of fire outbreaks. Consider it the most effortless and inexpensive fire protection measure you can have. Always remember that industrial coatings and safety are always synonymous.

Detailed Information About Storage Tank

Author: jessica thomson

Storage tank is something, which is used to hold or store liquids or compressed gas. Artificial lakes or ponds can be termed as storage tanks as well. These can also be called artificial containers. These are found in different shapes as well. The design of the tank is chosen based on the purpose for which it would be used. These can be horizontally or vertically cylindrical. These are found to have either open or close top. The bottoms are found in the shapes of slope, cone, dish, or flat. However, the most common design is rounded corners and vertical cylindrical shape.

In order to withstand the hydrostatically induced hydraulic pressure liquid stored in the container, the above-mentioned particular shape is used. The main purpose of using a particular type of container is to ensure that it handles the pressure of the liquid inside properly so that no problem is caused. Special tankers are used to move these containers and tanks from one place to another. The handling is done in the most careful way so that there is no chance of seeping or spilling of liquid and evaporation of gas. Most of the tanks are covered with containment dike in order to ensure that even if leakage is caused, it can be contained successfully.

Some storage tanks are there that needs additional floating roofs. The roof is used to maintain a balancing act since the liquid inside rises and falls during transportation. It is also beneficial to maintain the total vapor space present above the level of the liquid. It is also considered as a measure to prevent pollution and ensure safety. When you buy or hire an oil container ensure that it is in the perfect condition in order to avoid any kind of mishap. Different types of storage tanks include DISPATCH, COT, PIT, UTILITIES, OSBL, and ISBL.
